Safer pets, safer families
When forced to choose between leaving a pet behind to escape family violence or living a life of abuse, more than half of women will choose to stay and suffer to protect their pet. New Zealand has amazing safe havens for women, men, and children escaping violence but, sadly, most emergency accommodation cannot accommodate their pets. If left behind, pets risk being hurt or even killed in a bid to hurt victims or coerce them to come home. Pet Refuge believes no family should have to make that choice. And that no pet should suffer at the hands of an abuser. Our temporary shelter and care means pets and families can escape violence to start safe, new lives TOGETHER. Since our shelter doors opened we have have provided 45,536 nights of safety to 480 vulnerable pets from 296 families across the country. With your help, we can do more.

We NEED your help to keep pets safe
When we take a pet into care, we’re committing to providing everything they need to heal until they can be reunited with their family in safety.

If it weren't for Pet Refuge I don't know what would have happened. What it would have done to me having to leave her. It may have very well tipped me over the edge, because it’s just me and *Tigger.
