Get Help

A temporary safe haven for pets of victims leaving domestic violence across New Zealand.

How does it work?

Pet Refuge is a national charity that provides temporary accommodation for pets affected by domestic violence, while their owners secure their own safety.

We aim to make it easier to leave abuse sooner, by caring for family pets in our Auckland based shelter until they can be reunited with their loved ones.

Eligibility

To use Pet Refuge services, you must:

  • Have left or are planning to leave domestic violence
  • Be actively working to seek safe, long-term accommodation where pets are allowed
  • Have no other alternatives for your animals and have explored all other options (such as family, friends or private boarding)
  • Pet Refuge will prioritise referrals from clients living in refuge and higher risk cases of violence dependent on the need.

What you need to know

  • Dogs, cats, smaller animals and birds will be transported from around New Zealand to and from our Auckland based shelter
  • A national network of foster farms will assist with larger farm animals
  • This is a short-term solution: Pet Refuge cannot guarantee a length of stay for any animal
  • Pet Refuge will cover all reasonable boarding, transport, vet costs and vaccinate all animals on arrival if required
