*Monty was left behind
One day, *Monty was surrounded by the children he loved. The next, he was left tied up outside.
Still just a pup, Monty had grown up as part of a loving family. He adored the children and was fiercely protective of them. But behind closed doors, Monty was also living with escalating violence — and he was being hurt too.
“My abuser hit me, and he hit and kicked Monty too.”
The violence became life-threatening. “I reached a point where I just didn’t know if I was going to be alive tomorrow.”
Monty’s human-mum had to flee with her children, but with nowhere safe for Monty to go, she was forced to leave him with family connected to those causing the harm.
“They didn’t really want him there, so Monty was left tied up outside most of the time. He went from a loving home to a dump and no regular meals.”
Desperate for attention and love, Monty would run after cars whenever people came and went — so he was kept tied up.

Pet Refuge provides temporary shelter and care for pets while families escape family violence, including nationwide transport, a safe bed, vet care, food and bespoke enrichment and training.
In just two weeks, 17 dogs entered our shelter, and right now, we’re at capacity with at least six more on our waitlist urgently needing safety. Every day they wait can mean another night without somewhere safe to sleep.
We can create more safe spaces through trusted boarding partners, but we need support to fund them.
Give $30 a month to our Safe Beds for Pets programme. Help get dogs like Monty off the waitlist and give them somewhere safe to sleep tonight.
