Bronco the dog

*Bronco and *Sonia

*Bronco and his human-mum *Sonia were living with abuse, isolated from friends and family without any support to leave. Until Sonia reached out to Pet Refuge.

Sonia was nervous to hand Bronco over to our caseworkers as he was not only her pet but her confidant, protector, and closest friend but, ultimately, Sonia knew this was the best solution to getting them both to safety.

When the time finally came to reunite Sonia and Bronco in their new safe home Sonia received one final update from our team before the big day:

“…he has come a long way while at Pet Refuge. Especially with his lead work and his focus. He has become a team favourite, and it is bittersweet to see him go. We all wish him happiness and joy at his new home and are so pleased you will get to see him soon ”

To which Sonia replied:

“Oh, my goodness ... I'm crying with the same bittersweetness...the pictures of him running in the open spaces and goofing out on smells. I really honestly don't know how I would've coped without you guys; I consider you to be my boy’s mama’s. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do… I can’t wait to have my baby boy back.”

While our work can be heartbreaking, these moments are why we do what we do.

"They’re not just cats. They’re our family.

That’s what made Pet Refuge so special – they understood that. They were a dedicated support for the pets. Once we got them into Pet Refuge, I felt like I could breathe again knowing they were safe, warm, and cared for. They even had their birthdays while they were there.

I’ll never forget the support Pet Refuge gave us. In the middle of so much chaos, they kept our cats safe so that our family could stay together" - *Maddy
