*Bodhi and *Amber
*Bodhi is a well-loved 15-year-old dog whose life got turned upside down when his human-dad turned to substances, and what used to be a loving household turned abusive towards Bodhi and his human-mum *Amber.
“He said several times that he didn't want Bodhi around and that he'd kill him. He was just horrible. He used to come home, and Bodhi would just go run and hide under the bed, or hide somewhere, or run outside, so he wouldn't need to see him.” - Amber
We received a frantic call for help from Amber late at night asking for Bodhi to be picked up within the next twelve hours. She had a small window where her ex-husband was off the property. We were at capacity but knowing this might have been one of the very few chances to get them both to safety we made a temporary plan to get them out until we could get Bodhi into the Pet Refuge shelter.
If you ever wanted to know the value of a dollar to us here at Pet Refuge, it's being able to receive a call on any given day and know that we can support pets like Bodhi and their families to escape violence, even if that means having to operate outside of our standard operations. This kind of agility costs money, and for some it'll be the difference between life and death.
Working in the family violence industry, we don’t know what the next call will be, or the level of help required. Our loyal supporters and family of regular givers allow us to confidently say ‘yes’ regardless of the circumstances.
Letter from reunited families

"They’re not just cats. They’re our family.
That’s what made Pet Refuge so special – they understood that. They were a dedicated support for the pets. Once we got them into Pet Refuge, I felt like I could breathe again knowing they were safe, warm, and cared for. They even had their birthdays while they were there.
I’ll never forget the support Pet Refuge gave us. In the middle of so much chaos, they kept our cats safe so that our family could stay together" - *Maddy
